The explosion of grunge in the early 1990s changed rock music forever, but the story began years earlier in Seattle's underground music scene. In this episode of Booked on Rock, music journalist and author Gillian G. Gaar returns to explore grunge music history and her new book, Grunge: The Story of the Music That Redefined Rock. Drawing on her firsthand experiences covering the Seattle scene, Gaar discusses the early influence of the Melvins, Green River, and Mudhoney, the role of Sub Pop Records, and how bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains transformed a regional movement into a worldwide phenomenon. She also reveals why she initially believed Mudhoney, rather than Nirvana, would become Seattle's biggest band.

Gaar takes us behind the scenes of some of grunge's most influential recordings, including Nirvana's Nevermind and In Utero, Pearl Jam's Ten, Alice in Chains' Facelift, and Soundgarden's Superunknown. She shares stories about producer Butch Vig's work with Kurt Cobain, the musical influence of Melvins guitarist Buzz Osborne, the evolution of Pearl Jam following Andrew Wood's death, and her own backstage encounter with Cobain just months before his passing. From the guitar sounds that defined a generation to the lasting legacy of Seattle's alternative rock revolution, this conversation offers a fascinating look at grunge music history through the eyes of someone who witnessed it firsthand.
